Mother Daughter Portraits Last a Lifetime-Katy Houston Photographer

Hair and Makeup by Rachael Elise Walker — Elise Artistry

Some people are simply so  full of life and adventure that you never know what’s going to happen when they get creative, but you know that it’s going to be fun.  Originally we had planned to only photograph Mary, the mom in this series. BUT — as we worked through our consultation, we realized that we would all be missing out if we didn’t bring her daughter into the session as well — and I am so glad we did.

This is something I believe EVERY mother and daughter should do tpgether. Not only did they get to spend an afternoon laughing and playing “dress-up”  together, they both looked AMAZING when they left the studio for dinner..

I secretly wished I could have tagged along just to watch people’s reaction as they walked by.  Stay with me, and you’ll see why!

AND _ to top it off, they’ll have fabulous heirloom images of each other to treasure for ever.

R is a gorgeous young teen.  She is sweet, quiet and soft-spoken … UNTIL she unleashes her inner goth. It may seem like an oxymoron, but  when she turns on her dark side,  THAT is  when she really lights up.

We started out our session with a nice casual feel,  and with the help of  our in-studio makeup artist and stylist, Rachael Walker, we  worked our way up from there.

Mary took a more formal route . . .

2015-10-23_0039

Isn’t she lovely?

2015-10-23_0035

But she was a great sport about letting R play out her inner rock goddess complete with blue hair extensions and super-dramatic makeup.

2015-10-23_0040

Very moody, huh? 2015-10-23_0042 2015-10-23_0048

Because  Mike Chetty  and I raised five sons, we have a collection of old band instruments in our closets.

Most are in better shape than this old French Horn that had been previously destined to the trash heap, but  I love how well it played into our theme.   We didn’t  have to worry about damaging it, and I am super glad it found its way into my prop closet!

This was by FAR one of my favorite sessions in a long time.  I can’t wait to do another concept escalation based on creativity and dreams.  There’s one in the planning stages now, and I would  love to create one for YOU as well.

Sugar and Spice (Cake) Katy Houston Photographer

I can hardly believe it’s been more than a year since these yummy little girls came into my world and into my heart. Watching them grow and explore is such a joy.

It really feels like it’s only been a week or so since they were tiny squirmy newborns in the studio, but they have already celebrated turning one.   .  They were born only a few minutes apart, but on both sides of midnight, so they each get their own official birthday.  These escapades actually happened a little while back, but  the delinquent blogger strikes again — and we are sometimes slow to the blogging board.

Still — they are absolutely too  gorgeous not to share here. 2015-12-02_0001As they say, Better late than never!

Happy belated birthday little ladies.  You are always welcome to come play in Miss Shelly’s studio playhouse with me.

Flavia’s Flavors – Houston Small Business Photographer

Meet Flavia,  you’re going to love what she’s been  cooking up for you.Flavia 5

Some readers may be familiar with the blog she began writing back in 2009.   Flavia’s Flavors   was chock full of her yummy cooking and pretty pictures– and let me tell you, Flavia knows her way around the kitchen.

Throughout those years of writing and traveling, Flavia kept coming back to her true passion, the Italian food that she grew up with.  So after much soul searching and research to develop a style that is truly her own, she took the last few months to completely re-brand and re-style the blog.  She took down all of her old recipes and kitchen secrets and has started fresh with a bold crisp clean style and a razor-sharp focus on purely Italian cuisine.

In the new blog, we’ll dive deep  into her Italian Kitchen and  cuisine.  We’ll be alongside Flavia as she is — cooking — writing — and soon TEACHING cooking classes in her GORGEOUS kitchen or in yours.   Her  hands-on classes will include specific regional home-style recipes and techniques  as well as classic traditional favorites.  YUM!  I can hardly wait to gather up a few of my close friends for a Flavia’s Flavors class.

Flavia 4

When she told me about her rebranding plan and her classes, I thought it was a great idea, and couldn’t wait to see her thrive. THEN . . .she asked me to photograph her so that she would have fresh bright images to populate her blog.  Ummmm yes thank you.  I was THRILLED.  We spent a delightful  morning together  creating a few bright and cheery portraits — and THEN she started chopping tomatoes, garlic, and basil to create a tray of bruschetta toast.

I believe I INHALED more than my share.  Soooo very very delicioso!

Check out HER post where she talks about our shoot HERE!

Flavia 3

I first met Flavia a couple of years ago along with several AMAZING bloggers and social media masterminds who live in the Katy area, and I liked her from the beginning.  What’s not to like?  She is gorgeous, poised, sweet, kind, talented  and oh so very nice.
Flavia 2

Once when I needed some help  figuring out how to integrate my own social media workflow, Flavia was the one who invited me to sit down with her and learn how she does it. Seriously saved my sanity — or what little there was left of it.

Flavia 7

Flavia 8

Thank you, Flavia, for allowing me into your beautiful Italian home. I can’t wait to see what you’ve got in store for us as this blog and class takes off.  Please count me among your biggest fans.

Be sure to check out her blog and subscribe to it.  You’ll find her at www.flaviasflavors.com

Summer Siblings – Katy Houston Photographer

Here’s something a little different for my blog.  I don’t photograph many kids.  Mostly I concentrate on teens and adults, and I nearly always leave the whole chase-a-toddler-through-the-park scenario to my colleagues who are more well suited for those antics.   But once the kids are school-aged, I have a hard time resisting them.  Especially when they’re as fun to hang out with as the kids in the N Family.

I don’t know how I got so luck y to have Little Miss L and her mom knock on my door selling Girl Scout Cookies a couple of years ago.  I’m a sucker for Caramel Delights and Peanut Butter Sandwiches.  They had the goods. We  stood on the porch talking for a LONG time and became friends immediately.

Haden Parker and Lauren 1

You might recognize some of these faces  — or at least one because she has popped in and out of  previous sessions with older siblings like she did HERE  and HERE

These kids have amazing parents who are committed to capturing great images  of them individually on their birthdays and around their half birthdays too.  They come from a very large family, so it’s nice to focus attention on just two or three kids at one time. AND —  I’m the lucky duck that gets to create those photographs for them.   We print all the best images, mount them, and deliver them in a custom keepsake image box.

PHOTOBOMB!  YEAH! Haden Parker and Lauren 8Our session took place on a steamy morning, so ending the session by cooling off in the pool was a great idea! At least, that’s what L thought.

I agree!

Senior Portraits for S’vani – Cy-Fair Houston Photographer

THIS  . . . THIS is the face of The Class of 2016.

This is S’vani, a Senior at Langham Creek High School in the Cy-Fair  ISD.

HAIR AND MAKEUP IN STUDIO by Cintya Velderrain

2015-10-23_0004

I loved working with her because she is always smiling.  Seriously.  ALWAYS smiling.  She smiles so much that we had to WORK  HARD to capture a few serious images of her.

We liked the smiling photographs best through because they are so … HER.

If the rest of her classmates are anything like S’vani, their school must run a close second to Disney as the Happiest Place on Earth!

2015-10-23_0005 2015-10-23_0006

What is it that makes her smile?

For one thing, her participation and leadership  in Color Guard runs through her very core.  For those of you who are uninitiated, the Langham Creek Color Guard is absolutely legendary and has been for years.

You know what else is cool?  S’vani’s MOTHER, Rachel,  performed with the very same group when she was in high school.

They were great then too!  Just ask her.

Maybe flag, rifle, and marching skills are hereditary.  Just sayin’

2015-10-23_0017

2015-10-23_0007

Oh, and did you see that big red NHS on the sleeve of her letter jacket above?  Being a part of the National Honor Society  can only mean that S’vani is also ONE SMART COOKIE!  NHS gathers the students with the highest grades and helps prepare them to be successful leaders as they provide much-needed services to people and other organizations within their community.

2015-10-23_0008

After graduation, S’vani plans become a psychologist, and she will study at Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska where she has already been accepted.

2015-10-23_0009

2015-10-23_0010

As for her fashion-style, S’vani says she likes to mostly be comfortable, but she LOVES to dress up for special occasions — and sometimes just because.

2015-10-23_0003

2015-10-23_0011

In her down time, when she has any, she may be found enjoying  bubble tea and all things associated with Asian culture along with her closest friends.

What nobody knows about her, though,  is that she loves video games and she’s pretty darn good at League of Legends, Pokemon, Team Fortress 2, Assassin’s Creed, and Border Bands 2.

I thoroughly enjoyed working with you, S’vani.  Your future is bright because you SHINE! Enjoy your senior year and always follow your heart.

A Love Story Legacy – Katy Houston Photographer

It started out as a simple thought. Bruce and Linda had not had a portrait taken together in a long long time.

Chances are pretty good that most people who don’t have small kids at home, and many who do, haven’t taken the time to be photographed together either.

They were getting ready to celebrate their 45th anniversary, so Linda called to schedule a portrait session for the two of them.  The longer we talked we realized that a basic portrait just wouldn’t do.  We absolutely needed to capture the very essence of this relationship, and in doing so we needed to create a true heirloom legacy — something to one day be passed along to their grandchildren and to remind them of the joy and the active life and the romantic feelings that these two have for each other.

2015-10-23_0019

If you knew this couple, one thing you would know for sure is that they are every bit as much in love  today as they were 45 years ago.  They’ve traveled quite a ways together down this road called life, and they still have a long long way to go.  We decided to spend the better part of a  day together so that we could document a relatively normal day in their life — from breakfast time to a dinner date with some fun stuff thrown into the middle of it all.

Our schedule was a little bit whack-a-d0odle  and out of order, but we were aiming for the essence of a day.  We came pretty close!

To keep things real, westarted out at breakfast time.   Toast and eggs.  T-shirts, newspaper,  and coffee.  It feels like home! That’s for sure. 2015-10-23_0022 2015-10-23_0021

The garden needed a little weeding and trim work, so after breakfast we headed out to the back yard for a little work session.

2015-10-23_0023

And then we all  came in to exercise.

… Ahhhhh!   So that’s how Linda keeps her girlish figure and how Bruce keeps up with her day in and day out.  Did I mention  how much I love love love their energy?

2015-10-23_0024

Most days find Bruce and Linda very-well connected to their tablets and computers where they check up on their grandchildren, their own parents and siblings, and of course their friends.

2015-10-23_0025

Have you heard the old adage about the couple that hunts together?  That’ okay.  Neither have I. In fact, aside from my own grandparents, I can’t even think of any other couples I know that both people enjoy a frosty trip out to the lease, but every year they hunt together . . . deer, quail,  elk . . . whatever else it is that people hunt.

Sooooooo — just for fun we decided to create a Texas Hunting Season parody version of the famous American Gothic painting by Grant Wood.   The house next door to them had a peaked gable that worked nicely for the background.

We laughed and laughed.

Fortunately none of the neighbors came out to find out why we were standing in the middle of the cul-de-sac with camoflauge, hunters’ orange safety gear,  a deer rifle, and antlers, but if they had we would have made up a crazy lie.

2015-10-26_0001

I don’t believe that we could have gotten a more accurate facial expression  than Linda’s stern look if we had brought in a professional acting coach.   PRICELESS!  It was so very hard to keep a straight face.

On another note . . .  did you know that Bruce is actually ONE SUPER COOL GRAMPA?  Well, he IS!    His granddaughter is learning how to drive, and when he takes her out to practice, he lets her drive his “baby,” this classic Porsche convertible.   Granddaughter wasn’t with us when we were shooting, but we still made sure to save time for a drive to the park.   THIS, my friends,  is one sweet ride!

2015-10-23_0018b

It was a beautiful day to put the top down and enjoy the breezes, and also to take a walk through the park.

2015-10-23_0032 2015-10-23_0031

As a highlight to our very active day,  we brought my makeup artist, Cintya Velderrain right to Linda’s own boudoir for a special hair and makeup session so that she could be her loveliest in time for their at-home date night.

2015-10-23_0028 For date night, Bruce and Linda prepared a delicate chicken piccatta  with broccoli and artisan bread.  Of course they  washed it down with some red wine.

Bruce is a fantastic chef, and he makes a mean chocolate martini too, but that’s a story for another time. 2015-10-23_0026   2015-10-23_0027

Dinner and dancing —  Forty-five years of marriage — and the romance between these two is still palpable.  There’s something very very special about the way the look into each others eyes.

2015-10-23_0029

We took all these beautiful images and a few more and bound them together into a lovely album to showcase their unique relationship and the love that has carried them through the years.

Happy anniversary Bruce and Linda!  You are a most special couple.  I absolutely  love you to pieces!

Meet the beautiful ladies at Sweet Three Nail Lounge – Katy Business Photographer

These ladies make people look fantastic — hands down — every single day.  But not long ago I got to be the one who captured their personalities and made THEM look fabulous too.  Turnabout’s fair play, and it’s FUN!

2015-10-23_0002

Confession time!  I’ve never been one of those women who gets a regular manicure or pedicure.

I used to make an effort to get my annual spring pedicure every three or four years, and I might have sprung for a luscious bottle of lacquer at the grocery store if I thought  I needed a treat, but it might have been a month or more before I ever opened it up and slapped it onto my nails.  Yep — that’s just how it shook out.

Perhaps I never joined the ranks of manicure mavens  because I never had any daughters to share the bonding experience with.  Maybe it’s because I figured my relentless gardening habits would  wreck a new paintjob before the first day was out.   Mostly though, I never took especially good care of my nails and feet because I didn’t have a place where I felt like the staff cared if I was  there or ever came back again.

After all, our city has a nail salon, a donut shop, and a dry-cleaners on every corner.

That’s how it used to be until I discovered Sweet Three Nail Lounge here in Katy.  Owner, Kristina Luong has built a lovely  little welcoming retreat.  She and her staff take the time to get to know their clients, and they don’t cut corners on products or cleanliness either.  No WAY NO HOW!

Sweet Three is a place where you are just as likely to  find yourself sitting next to  a Houston Power Broker  and talking business as you will be to find yourself seated between teenage sisters and  engaging in a lively discussion ranging from rescue dogs to glow-in-the dark polish to tales about the escapades of learning to drive.  You are as likely to seal a contract in the pedicure chair as you are to meet a new friend who thinks just like you do.

Instead of meeting for lunch or coffee, Sweet Three has become the place for networking meetings and business collaborations.

 2015-10-23_0001

Don’t think that Sweet Three is just a ladies hangout either.  If a man is man-enough for a pedi, he will soon become a devotee of this place too.

That’s right!  I’ve never been a mani-pedi sort of gal, but now I never leave the lounge without making my next appointment.  I love this place and you will too.

So, as Kristina says, come have a glass of wine and get your nails done.  Tell them that Shelly the photographer sent you — and that you want that glass of wine

— as long as you are old enough to legally partake.  Insert smiley emoticon here!

Senior Portraits for Chloe – Katy Houston Photographer

I don’t know where to begin when I talk about Chloe.  Maybe this is one of those times where a picture really is worth a thousand words.

For a little background,  I’ve known Chloe’s family for quite some time, and was honored beyond belief when I got to accompany them to the airport with my camera several years ago to pick up her dad after he finished his final overseas military deployment.  Those old images still bring tears to my eyes when I go back through them!

And then a year ago, I got to create Chloe’s sister’s senior portraits.

So, you probably can imagine how much I was looking forward to this photoshoot.

2015-07-22_0012

Chloe’s a natural beauty in that fresh-scrubbed girl next door sort of style, so even when she arrived bare-faced after school, she looked gorgeous.

Then, but after a little time in the chair here at the studio with hair and makeup artist,  Cintya, she absolutely GLOWED!

2015-07-22_0023

2015-07-22_0018

We built a lovely portrait album from her session, and Chloe chose some scriptures that are special to her for several of the pages. 2015-07-22_0017

2015-07-22_0019

Won’t she have fun looking at these and sharing them with her children and her nieces and nephews one day?

Oh, the leaf-drop!  We threw leaves in the air over and over again until we could get a frame where the leaves were in the air but not blocking her face, and her eyes were open.

Of course it took us even longer because we were both laughing so hard!

2015-07-22_0020

2015-07-22_0021

2015-07-22_0022

In addition to being a very bright student, Chloe also runs cross country.

2015-07-22_0013

Chloe is a young woman who sees God’s love everywhere she looks — and she reflects that  love and joy back to others thousand-fold. She’s spent her summer serving as a youth-group intern for her church, working with kids here in town and on mission trips.

Before long she will be on her way to East Texas Baptist University in Marshall where she will continue to grow in grace as she continues her education.

Will’s Senior Portraits – Katy Houston Photographer

Here’s another in our series of whatever happened to the blog posts for the class of 2015.

We still haven’t answered the mystery, but at least it’s giving me an opportunity to revisit some of my favorite senior portraits from the past year.

2015-07-22_0011

This is Will.

2015-07-22_0010

I had a great time photographing Will over a period of time. He came into the studio several times. First, to help me with an advertising project, but then later for both  studio and separate location sessions. He also returned for a quick multi-generational shoot with his dad and grandfather. How cool is THAT?

2015-07-22_0009

Get a load of this Letter Jacket!   I don’t believe there’s anything Will doesn’t do well. Football, Baseball, NHS … It took a lot of talent and hard work combined to earn a jacket like this.

2015-07-22_0008

For now, he’s cramming in as many good home-cooked meals and fun activities with his friends before he hits the road to Waco in a matter of weeks.

That’s right — Will is now a Baylor Bear. 2015-07-22_0007 2015-07-22_0006 2015-07-22_0005 2015-07-22_0004

Think he’ll miss the City of Katy at all?  2015-07-22_0003

I commend this entire family for carving some time out of their schedule to stop by so that I could create a few multi-generational images of Will with his dad and grandfather.  What a treasure these will be in the years to come.

Portraits for Nicholas – Katy Houston Photographer

This is another of my lost blog post series.  It’s a redux of a post that I feel certain I created and shared earlier this year but which disappeared into thin air.

This session actually took place back in February on a very cold and rainy day, and Nicholas was a GREAT SPORT about his outdoor session.

2015-07-13_0018

I love photographing guys who are just a little bit quiet and shy.

It’s fun to see how they relax once they realize that I won’t make them do anything cheesy for the camera, once they realize that they won’t have to smile  like the Cheshire Cat until their jaws hurt.

Nicholas is one of those guys

2015-07-13_0021

It was his 17th birthday when we met for our session at his family home.  Nicholas is quite an accomplished horseman, so we spent most of our time in and around the barn.

2015-07-13_0022

And this is Smokey.   There’s not much in this world that can compare to the velvety smooth nose of a horse.  SWOON!

2015-07-13_0023 2015-07-13_0025We wrapped up our session with frozen fingers and frozen toes — and an extra nose rub and hug for Smokey.
